Calculation explained simply
How much am I entitled to in citizen's income?
Citizen's income is intended to secure your livelihood. It is a basic income support that consists of various components:
The standard service:
The standard benefit covers everyday expenses and is paid as a monthly lump sum. The amount is set by the federal government and adjusted on January 1 of each year. The amount of the standard benefit depends on your family situation and, in the case of children, on their age.
The following values apply for 2025:
Single adults | 563 |
|---|---|
Adult partners | $506 |
Children aged 18 to 24 living at home | $500 |
Children aged 14 to 17 | $550 |
Children aged 6 to 13 | $390 |
Children aged 0 to 5 | $357 |
additional requirements
You can receive additional monthly benefits for certain circumstances. You will receive these in addition to the standard benefits. You will receive additional benefits if you
- are pregnant
- be a single parent
- have a disability
- have a medical condition and, for this reason, can prove that they require a special diet (there is no additional requirement for diabetes or lactose-free diets)
- have special, ongoing, or one-time needs
- have to pay a contribution towards the purchase or loan of schoolbooks at the beginning of the school year
- Heat your hot water with a boiler or instantaneous water heater
Accommodation costs
Monthly accommodation costs are also included in living expenses. These are granted in the actual amount if they are reasonable.
Further information on housing costs can be found under the tab "All about housing."
The new regulations on citizen's income came into force on January 1, 2023. During the first 12 months (waiting period), the actual costs of your apartment will be covered if you already live there. If you receive benefits for longer than 1 year, your housing costs will be reviewed for appropriateness after 12 months (waiting period). If your costs are unreasonably high, you will be asked to reduce them.
Your individual needs will be determined. Subsequently, it will be checked whether you can cover your monthly needs from your own income and assets.
