Job search/starting work
If I take on work, will I earn less money?
If you earn any income, you must inform the Jobcenter immediately. This also applies if you take up marginal employment (colloquially known as a mini-job). The Jobcenter will then recalculate your benefits and issue you with a new notice.
Can I get a (bridging) loan?
Until your first wage payment, you have the option of applying for a loan. You will receive the loan, for example, if your wages are not paid until the 15th or 30th of the current month and you do not have the financial means to bridge the gap until your first wage payment. The loan must be applied for in writing. It can be granted up to a maximum of your previous benefit entitlement. If you are still entitled to benefits, the loan will be offset against 5% of your standard benefit from the month after it is paid out (directly withheld).
You can apply for the loan online here:

Do I have to accept every job, even with temporary employment agencies or mini-jobs?
According to Section 10 SGB II (Social Security Code II) Paragraph 1, the law stipulates that you must take up any job that reduces or ends your need for assistance (benefit receipt). This includes working for a temporary employment agency as well as a mini-job.
Any work is therefore reasonable for a person who is capable of working and entitled to benefits, unless
1. they are physically, mentally, or emotionally incapable of performing the specific work,
2. performing the work would make it significantly more difficult to continue performing their previous main job, because their previous job involved particular physical demands,
3. performing the work would jeopardize the upbringing of her child or her partner's child [...],
4. performing the work would be incompatible with caring for a relative and the care cannot be provided in any other way, or there is another important reason preventing the performance of the work.
If I turn down a job offer, what happens then?
If you reject a reasonable job offer without good reason, your benefits may be reduced or cut (sanction). To avoid difficulties, you should always inform your integration specialist before rejecting a job offer. They can then check whether financial assistance (support from the Jobcenter) could still lead to an employment contract.
As a rule, however, you must accept any "reasonable" job offer that ends or reduces your need for assistance. Please discuss your individual case with your integration specialist in advance to obtain more detailed information.
What is entry allowance?
The Job Center can provide financial support for your efforts to integrate into the labor market, thereby facilitating your transition from unemployment to everyday working life.
Support in the form of an entry allowance is available under the following conditions:
- You take up employment subject to social insurance contributions that pays only slightly more than your entitlement to citizen's income.
- This employment will end your need for assistance for the foreseeable future.
- The support is necessary for professional integration.
- The duration and amount of support depend on your individual situation and are based, among other things, on the duration of unemployment and the size of your household.
Please note that funding is only possible if you apply for it before you start work.
If the entry allowance is approved, it will be paid in addition to the citizen's income and will not be counted toward it.
For further information, please contact your integration specialist.
Can I receive a subsidy for work clothes/work equipment?
The costs of necessary work clothing and work equipment can be subsidized, provided that the employer is not legally obliged to cover these costs. This is always the case when it comes to protective work clothing, such as safety shoes.
If you require work clothing or tools that your employer does not provide, you can apply for a subsidy. Examples: work coats, chef's jackets, etc.
However, clothing that can also be used primarily for private purposes is not eligible for reimbursement.
Can I get my travel expenses paid when I start work? (Commuting expenses)
The Jobcenter can support you in your new job during the initial period. The maximum cost allowance is €420 per month and can be granted for one month if you start working in the Hagen city area or for up to three months if you start working outside the city, provided you have submitted an application in advance.
In the case of employment under a temporary employment contract or with a security company (security service), only the commuting costs between the employee's home and the company's place of business can be covered. Please discuss the reimbursement of travel expenses from the place of business to the place of work with your new employer.
Further information is available from your integration specialist.
I have received a job offer outside of Hagen. Will my relocation be paid for?
If you need to relocate due to taking up employment outside of Hagen, the costs for transporting your furniture may be covered. The costs for dismantling and reassembling furniture are not reimbursable.
The move must primarily be carried out by the employee themselves. You can receive a maximum of €1,000 for this, e.g. for renting a vehicle and fuel costs.
In exceptional cases where it is not reasonable to expect you to carry out the move yourself, the costs of a moving company may be covered up to a maximum of €2,500.
The application must be submitted in advance to your integration specialist, who will also be happy to answer any questions you may have.
I am starting a new job outside Hagen, but I have not yet terminated my lease. Can the costs of maintaining two households be covered?
If it is unreasonable for you to commute between your home and place of work every day when taking up employment away from home and this necessitates maintaining two households, the costs can be covered. Up to 2½ hours per working day is considered reasonable for commuting. This benefit is limited to 6 months. Whether or not a separation allowance is granted, and if so, how much, is always decided at the discretion of the responsible integration specialist. Proof of maintaining two households must be provided in the form of the rental agreement for the additional apartment and the employment contract. If the employer provides accommodation, no separation allowance can be granted, as the employee does not incur any costs themselves.
A maximum of €420 per month can be paid as a separation allowance for maintaining two households for the first 6 months of employment.
I have a job offer, but I absolutely need a driver's license. Will the costs be covered?
Flexibility and mobility are fundamental pillars that many employers value.
The Hagen Job Center offers subsidies of up to €2,000 for a Class B driver's license if the job requires driving a motor vehicle or if the place of work or training cannot be reached by public transportation within a reasonable time or only under unreasonable circumstances, subject to certain conditions.
The application must be accompanied by the training or employment contract and a detailed description of the work to be performed. A letter of intent to hire is not sufficient.
Your integration specialist will answer any further questions you may have.
I have a job offer, but I absolutely need a car/moped/e-bike. Will the job center cover the costs?
A subsidy for a used motor vehicle is possible if the place of work or training cannot be reached by public transport within a reasonable time or only under unreasonable circumstances.
The subsidy amounts to up to €2,500.
You must always provide detailed reasons for the necessity of purchasing a car. In addition, at least two comparative offers must be obtained. Furthermore, you must demonstrate that the total financing (e.g., residual financing of the car) and the follow-up costs (vehicle tax, liability insurance, etc.) are secured and prove that there are no reasons preventing the registration of the vehicle (e.g., tax debts).
For more information, please contact your integration specialist.
Funding is excluded if the buyer and seller are personally or professionally connected (e.g., sale between family members or sale from employer to employee).
Subsidies are also available for e-bikes.
I have received a job offer from a private employment agency. What do I need to bear in mind?
When looking for a new job, you can also seek assistance from a private employment agency. To do so, you must have received an activation and placement voucher (AVGS) from the Jobcenter for the use of a private employment agency.
A contract will then be concluded between you and the private employment agency. If the private employment agency then places you in a job that is subject to social insurance contributions, it can use your voucher to apply to the Jobcenter for remuneration for placing you in work. You have no legal entitlement to the placement voucher. Please note that without the placement voucher, the Jobcenter cannot cover the costs of the private employment agency.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact your personal integration specialist.
Can I get my application costs reimbursed?
Upon request, the Hagen Job Center can reimburse you for the costs of preparing and sending application documents up to a maximum of €350 per year.
Telephone or online applications are not usually subsidized.
Your integration specialist will be happy to inform you about the specific procedure.
If you have no experience in how to apply or introduce yourself correctly, please contact us for application training. This is free of charge for you.
I have a job offer and need a suit for it. Can the costs be covered?
In exceptional cases, the integration specialist may, for example, subsidize the purchase of a suit to "support the individual's personality." The subsidy is limited to a maximum of €200 per year. A subsidy is always possible if it improves the placement situation in general.
I have a job interview. Can I get my travel and, if applicable, accommodation costs reimbursed?
If you are invited to a job interview by an employer, we can reimburse your travel expenses upon presentation of receipts if the company does not cover these costs. We will cover the costs of the lowest class of the most appropriate public transport or €0.20 per kilometer traveled.
Under certain circumstances, if you need to attend interviews over several days, we may also cover your accommodation costs up to €70, including breakfast.
Travel expenses for interviews with private employment agencies cannot be reimbursed.
Please submit your application for reimbursement before traveling to the interview.
Your integration specialist will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Is it possible to receive funding from you for a PC, laptop, tablet, printer, or other hardware, including software?
If you require a digital device for the application process (creating application documents, participating in virtual selection procedures, or digital selection tests) and can prove that your household does not have access to such a device, you may apply for a one-time subsidy of up to €350.00.
For grants of €150.00 or more, you must submit three comparative offers from commercial dealers. Purchases from private individuals are not eligible for funding.
Your integration specialist will be happy to inform you about the specific procedure.
For example, I need a health certificate or a translation of my foreign driver's license. Can the costs be covered?
The costs can be covered upon request if they are necessary for placement in the labor market.
For example, the costs may be covered in the following cases:
- health certificate,
- Medical certificate for suitability assessment,
- Transcription of foreign driver's licenses,
- Translation of certificates,
- Renewal of licenses, e.g., renewal of truck driver's license from the age of 50.
If you require a certificate of good conduct, we can provide you with a certificate to obtain a fee waiver from the city of Hagen, so that you do not have to bear any costs.
Your integration specialist will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
I have to undergo an MPU (medical-psychological examination). Will the job center cover the costs?
The costs of a medical-psychological examination (MPU) are not covered by the job center. According to current social court rulings, the costs of the MPU are not covered by citizen's income. The expenses were incurred as a result of criminal behavior on the part of the citizen's income recipient. Citizen's income is primarily intended to guarantee the social minimum subsistence level. However, fines and warning fines are not covered by this.
I need a vaccination that is not covered by my health insurance or employer. Can you help me with this?
Yes, funding of up to €200.00 is available.
Please speak to your integration specialist beforehand.
